baby and me: no place like home

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a nest!

Puppet Song:
Who lives in the cozy nest, the cozy, the cozy nest?
Who live in the cozy nest?
It’s the birds!
What does an bird say?

Repeat with: Big brown tree/ owl AND my garden/ rabbit
(tune: Do You Know the Muffin Man)

Books We Read:
Who’s At Home- Davis
Where Does Maisy Live- Cousins

Flannel Board: Maisy Mouse, Maisy Mouse

This is a slight variation of Little Mouse, Little Mouse, Are You In The (COLOR) House?

This felt board immediately followed the Maisy book today.

Is Maisy the Mouse in one of these houses? Let’s look!

Maisy Mouse, Maisy Mouse, are you in the RED house?

Lift the felt houses one by one to find Maisy!

Puppet Song #2: Peekaboo

I brought back my Owl in a tree puppet for:

Where is Owl? Peeka BOO!
Where is Owl? Peeka BOO!
Where is Owl? Peeka BOO!
Peekaboo to Owl!

We also brought back the Moon, Sun & Star puppets from last week for another round of Zoom, Zoom, Zoom since it was so far and the eclipse was just yesterday.

This was a small group because this week's class was switched to Tuesday (hopefully for the last time LOL!) due to mandatory training on Thursday for me. The smaller audience is a nice change of pace for me once in a while but the bigger groups are fun too!

flannel friday: Night Moon, Night Moon, What Do You See?

everyone is talking about the upcoming eclipse so I chose a sun & moon theme for this week. I spotted an idea HERE for a “celestial themed" Brown Bear, Brown Bear type flannel board.
Bought my clipart on Etsy (which means "no time for felt" this week. back from a few days off and i feel like i will never catch up)

Used with an old, VERY basic homemade felt board. It is just a piece of cardboard and 2 sheets of felt: light blue on one side and black felt on the other. Don't use it very often now but its handy for outreach or if i want something that i can flip back and forth.

Night Moon, Night Moon what do you see?
I see a yellow star smiling at me!

Yellow Star, Yellow Star, what do you see?
I see a blue cloud smiling at me!

Blue Cloud, Blue Cloud, what do you see?
I see a raindrop smiling at me!

(I flipped by flannel board to the blue felt side for the rest)

Raindrop, Raindrop, what do you see?
I see a rainbow smiling at me!

Rainbow, Rainbow, what do you see?
I see a bright sun smiling at me!

Bright Sun, Bright Sun what do you see?

I see lots of pretty things smiling at me!
OR
I see a Rainbow, a Raindrop, a Blue Cloud, a Yellow Star, and a Night Moon- that’s what I see!

we sang this to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle. I used both endings today for different sessions and either one works fine!

thanks for reading!

toddler time: under the sun & over the moon

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found the SUN and the MOON! Hello Sun! Hello Moon!

Puppet Song: Mr Sun (& Mrs Moon!)

Lady Librarian saved me at the last minute this week! The morning of my program, I was still searching for the perfect song to kick off Toddler Time and I finally found it at 5:30 this morning! (i get up early to feed my cats)

Oh, Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me.
Oh, Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun,
Hiding behind a tree.
These little children are asking you,
Please come out so we can play with you.
Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me.

Oh, Mrs Moon, Moon, Mrs Silver Moon,
Please shine down on me.
Oh, Mrs Moon, Moon, Mrs Silver Moon,
Hiding behind a tree.
These little children are asking you,
Please come out so we can play with you.
Mrs Moon, Moon, Mrs Silver Moon,
Please shine down on me.

Books We Read:
What the Sun Sees/What the Moon Sees – Tafuri (big colorful illustrations and simple text make this one a winner in my book!)
Papa Please Bring the Moon for Me- Carle (my kids were a little young for this one but I gave it a try for the 1st session only)

Flannel Board: Night Moon, Night Moon, What Do You See?

I found an idea HERE for a “celestial themed" Brown Bear, Brown Bear flannel board and i knew it was perfect for my sun/moon theme. Bought the adorable clipart on Etsy.

Used with a VERY basic felt board I made myself many MANY moons ago. I had no $$ but wanted to try a felt board so I glued a piece of cardboard and 2 sheets of felt: light blue on one side and black felt on the other.

I used this for years, until someone finally sent me a real flannel board. I still bring it out occasionally when I need something small & portable for outreach or one that's reversible, etc.

I see pretty things smiling at me!
OR
I see a Rainbow, a Raindrop, a Blue Cloud, a Yellow Star, and a Night Moon- that’s what I see!

we sang this to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle. I used both endings today for different sessions and either one works fine!

Craft: Reversible Paper Plate Moon & Sun

So I used this moon/plate idea a while back for a moon theme & was planning to do it again this summer. Then, all the eclipse frenzy happened and I realized it would be great timing if we glued suns on the backs of the plates.

Many of the parents loved it, especially one whose daughter is named Luna!

I had two very manageable groups today, it was pretty rainy --  so no complaints! Very happy with all program elements!

baby & me: sun & moon

With all the excitement surrounding the eclipse this week, I chose the sun and moon for my theme this week!

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a moon! Hello Moon!

Prop Song: Zoom Zoom Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon! (Sun and stars too!)
From Jbrary

Books We Read:
Goodnight Moon- Brown
You Are My Sunshine- Church

Flannel Board: I Love You Sun

I made a flannel board to go with the Tomie DePaola book since the only one I can find is a board book version that is too small for my large group. I printed clipart to go with the text and sang it to the "You Are My Sunshine" tune.

Puppet Song: Peekaboo with Bunny

I have this adorable puppet (see previous pic) from a storytelling set purchased from Lakeshore. we covered him up with a scarf & played peekaboo today.

Where is Bunny? Peeka BOO!
Where is Bunny? Peeka BOO!
Where is Bunny? Peeka BOO!
Peekaboo to Bunny!

We had a ton of people today but everyone was super about participating and not chatting. a really great morning! at least like 30 babies and even more adults. very nice group.

mustache storytime

Opening Song: Mustaches for Everyone!

My father has a mustache
My mother has one too.
When I get older
I’ll have a big mustache too
Mustache, mustache
A big bushy mustache for me and you
Mustache, mustache,
I’ve got a great mustache, do you?

Borrowed from Singing in the Stacks
Handed out sticky mustaches to all!

Books We Read:

Mustache Up- Ainsworth
Mustache Baby- Heos
Book o Beards - Muir
Mo's Mustache- Clanton

Flannel Song #1: Ten Little Mustaches

Just a colorful counting song:
1 little, 2 little, 3 little mustaches…
10 little mustaches here today!

Count backwards to
…No little mustaches here today!

Flannel Board #2: Mr Lou
I was a little perplexed with this one at first because I had no idea how to do a felt face but I think it came out pretty good!

There once lived a man named Mr. Lou,
He had a mustache that grew, and grew, and GREW!

On Monday it was as tiny as his nose,

On Tuesday it was as wide as his smile.

On Wednesday it stretched as far as his ears.

On Thursday it was as long as his arms!

But on Friday Mr. Lou caught the flu… ACHOOO!
and off went the mustache into the air as it flew, flew, FLEW!

Flannel Board #3: Where is Mo’s Mustache?

Mo's mustache is missing, where can it be?
Is the (color) monster hiding it? Let’s look & see!
i scanned the images from the book (which is so cute, probably my favorite one of the four we read today) and cut a little black felt mustache.

Game #1: Mustache Match Up

Everyone pulled a mustache or two from my beach pail, then tried to make a match from the mustaches hanging on the walls.

Game#2: Pin the Mustache on the Man

Purchased on Amazon. was thinking of printing or making something myself but as always, the clock was ticking away & this was only like $5. Kids liked it.

Craft: Emergency Mustaches (on straws)

Free printable! Just need straws and a hole punch!

Prizes:
We gave out mustache pencil toppers and finger mustache tattoos, all from OTC.

I thought this was a really fun idea but only 13 kids signed up and about half showed up. All boys. I thought the silly nature of the mustaches would appeal to girls too, so I’m not sure why the interest was so low. I decorated the room so beautifully and spent a LOT of time on my books, songs, games etc. so a little disappointing. Weather was nasty today which didn’t help...

toddler time: rock the boat!

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found Maisy the mouse! Hi, Maisy! She is holding something: a boat!

Maybe Maisy is going sailing today! Good thing I brought my sailor hat!

Action Song: Have You Ever Seen a Sailboat?

a great one from Jbrary!

Have you ever seen a sailboat, a sailboat, a sailboat
Have you ever seen a sailboat
Waving its sail?
Wave this way and that way
And that way and this way
Have you ever seen a sailboat waving its sail?

Other Verse: Rocking back and forth

I love this song; most of my kids were totally uninterested. i think it was just that kind of morning.

Books We Read:
Row Row Row Your Boat- Cabrera (i like the interactive-ness of this one, some of my kids really liked it. like i mentioned, it was a rough morning)
Maisy’s Sailboat- Cousins (cute but a bit too small for a crowd)

so my search for a really amazing toddler boat book continues; these were decent choices tho!

Flannel Board: Where is Maisy?

First, we named the boat colors; then we counted them together.

Eddie the Elephant is looking for his friend Maisy! Is she on one of these boats?

Where is Maisy, where is Maisy?
Here I am, here I am!
Sailing on a blue boat, sailing on a blue boat.
Look and see, look and see!

Check under the boat & see who is there!

We found Squirrel, Panda, Charley and Tallulah and finally – last but not least: Maisy!

I made these felt boats (which I rarely have time to do) and decorated with white glitter and sequins. the Maisy characters are just laminated clipart. i wish i could make felt ones!

Probably the best part of the program today, besides the Banana Song & the craft <sigh>

Craft: Maisy puppet and pool noodle sailboats (see first photo as well as my other boat posts)

this year, I printed sailboat Maisys for kids to color and tape to a popsicle stick. This bought me time to pass out straws, foam sheet sails and pool noodle “slices.”

Pool noodle boats are one of my favorite crafts (cute and sooo easy to do) so we make them every summer. Each time I wonder:  WHY OH WHY is the morning of my BOAT program so crazy?!!!  I begged grownups in the 2nd session to be more quiet but nothing helped today. Kids seemed cranky &/or WILD, some parents were chatty &/or rude, both groups were VERY crowded. i carried on tho because the kids were listening and participating! hoping next time will be better...

baby & me: in the sea

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a FISH! What does a fish do? He SWIMS!

Puppet Song:

I’m a little fishy, I can swim.
Here is my tail, here are my fins.
When I want to have fun with my friends
I wiggle my tail & dive right in

Books We Read:
1,2,3 in the Sea - DeCicco
Who Swims? - Braun

Flannel Board: Ten Little Fishies

1 little, 2 little, 3 little fishies
4 little, 5 little, 6 little fishies
7 little, 8 little, 9 little fishies
10 little fishies love to swim!

Count back down to...
No little fishies here to swim

Peekaboo Board: Ocean Animals (from Lakeshore Learning)

Who’s behind the pink seashell, the pink seashell, the pink seashell?
Who’s behind the pink seashell? It’s a turtle! (tune: Do You Know the Muffin Man)
Hello Turtle!!

Peek at all the other sea animals too! I bought this as part of a set a while back and its amazing; unfortunately, LL doesn't seem to carry it anymore.

Very large group today, quiet with the singing but happy to chat so a bit rough to start but still a good morning! I loved my books and songs today. returned this week after a great vaca to CA but it was great to be back.

jaws 2: shark day returns!

i found so many great shark ideas that i needed TWO programs to fit them all in!

MORE sensational shark books:

since none of today's attendees had attended our earlier shark program, i also did a repeat of my number one, most favorite, totally awesomest shark story EVER:

ONE MORE super shark flannel song:

Sharks in the Bath Tub
(found video of elephant version on Jbrary & printable bath tub on Sunflower Storytime. Clip art shark heads were purchased on etsy.)

1 shark in the bath tub
going for a swim!
knock knock!
splash splash!
come on in!

5 sharks in the bath tub
going for a swim!
knock knock!
splash splash!
they all fell in!!!

(luckily, when i pulled off the bathtub, all of my sharks fell off the board too!)

MORE fun shark crafts:

The first craft was a 3D Floating Shark Craft from OTC and it was super easy to put together and sooooo cute!!

I also printed Clark the Shark masks onto white cardstock for the kids to cut and color and they came out AMAZING!!! You can print them in color but i didn't have the ink for that so i just printed in black & white. the kids added color with crayons and everyone loved them.

Also our "Walk the Plank" and "Feed the Shark" games returned!

...and we had enough leftover shark tattoos for everyone!! this program was so great; i am so happy we tried it this summer TWO TIMES!
