flannel friday: hello winter!

It feels like spring today in the Northeast but I am posting my snow themed felt story from last week's Baby & Me.

This flannel board was inspired by a holiday song that I found on Youtube. You can find it HERE.

I start with an empty board and add each item one at a time as we sing. These are just clipart images that I laminated but you could use felt if you like.

Hello, Snowflake
Hello, Snowball
Hello, Snowman
Winter time is here!

Hello, Hat
Hello, Scarf
Hello, Mittens
Winter time is here!

Hello, Penguin
Hello, Polar Bear
Hello, Reindeer
Winter time is here!

Let’s count them all up!

One, two, three
Four, five, six
Seven, eight, nine, ten! (count BOTH mittens)
Happy winter everyone!

I am already looking forward to adapting this song for all of the seasons!
For summer: ice cream, picnic, popsicle, beach, shells, starfish, sun, sunglasses, suncreen, fireworks, etc.
Or springtime: bunny, chick, butterfly, rain drops, umbrella, flower, bird...
Don't forget about autumn: leaves, apples, pumpkins, jacket, acorn, squirrel, pie...

Thanks for reading!

toddler time: animals in the snow

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found a POLAR BEAR on a sled!

Puppet Song:
Sliding down the hills in my little red sled
Sliding down the hills in my little red sled
Sliding down the hills in my little red sled
Having so much fun!

Snow’s falling down on my little red sled…
Waving to my friends on my little red sled…
Bouncing up & down on my little red sled…

Books We Read:
Peekaboo! Snow - Green/Hinton
If It's Snowy and You Know It, Clap Your Paws- Norman (selected 4 verses with easy movements)

Flannel Board:  Five on the Sled (based on book by Kim Norman)

I really wanted to use this book for my story time but i worried it was just too long for my toddlers. so i printed out some animals and used a flannel board version!

There were 5 on the sled
and the polar bear said
"Slide over! Slide over!" (slide motion with hand or body)
So they all slid over and 1 fell out!
("Bye Bye Penguin!", or Wolf or Reindeer, etc)

Continue removing animals with each verse until only Polar Bear is left.

There was 1 on the sled
and the polar bear said,
"I’m lonely! So lonely!
I’m chilled to the bone.
A polar bear loves sledding
But never alone!"

So his friends came back
and climbed right on
There were 5 on the sled
and the polar bear said,
"Let’s go!"

Puppet Song: There’s Something in the Snow

Borrowed from the amazing Storytime Katie!

There’s something in the snow that I can’t really see
Theres something in the snow
What could it be?

It makes a sound like…
Grrr (Polar Bear)
Waddle (Penguin)
Ark Ark (baby seal)
Hoot Hoot (snowy owl)

Craft: CD Polar Bears

I have a bunch of old CDs to recycle and they are so fun for crafts! I just printed out mouths on white paper and pre-cut them. I also cut out the noses since I wanted to put pom poms there. I pre-cut white circles for ears too. as i passed out the different pieces, the kids glued them on with stick glue. black pom poms fit perfectly into the hole of the cds -- no glue or tape required! We also added sticker eyes and some ribbons for hanging.

We had two nice size groups of about 15 kids each. i LOVED our craft and the kids & parents liked it too! I was also happy with my felt story and puppet game. I was a little nervous that the Peekaboo book might be confusing in a group setting but it went over pretty well with the kids so i give it a thumbs up.

baby & me: winter time is here!

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a SNOWFLAKE!

Prop Song: Snowflake On My Shoulder (with snowflake puppet)
Tune: Have You Ever Seen a Lassie

There’s a snowflake on my shoulder, my shoulder, my shoulder
There’s a snowflake on my shoulder and it's melting away!

We also had snowflakes on our heads, elbows, and knees!

Books We Read:
Snowflake Baby- Broach

Flannel Story: Hello Winter

(inspired by a holiday song I found on Youtube found HERE

Hello, Snowflake
Hello, Snowball
Hello, Snowman
Winter time is here!

Hello, Hat
Hello, Scarf
Hello, Mittens
Winter time is here!

Hello, Penguin
Hello, Polar Bear
Hello, Reindeer
Winter time is here!

Let’s count them all up!

One, two, three
Four, five, six
Seven, eight, nine, ten!
Happy winter everyone!

Puppet Song: Snowy Owl, Snowy Owl
(This is a twist I wrote of Brown Squirrel, Brown Squirrel, Shake Your Bushy Tail)

Snowy Owl, Snowy Owl, looking all around (move his head)
Snowy Owl, Snowy Owl, looking all around
You build your nest high in a tree (hold Owl up high)
I hear you say "Hoot Hoot" to me!
Snowy Owl, Snowy Owl, looking all around

Today’s class was not great. We had a bunch of noisy latecomers moving chairs around and a lot of chatting. It was so distracting and I could not hear myself so I knew the babies could not hear me. I asked nicely the first time for more participation. Then I had to stop the Hello Bubble song and ask again. By the time we got to scarves and shakey eggs, I was just tired of the rudeness. After the eggs, I skipped the scarves and brought out the toys. Kind of frustrating. Baby & Me class is not a playdate at your house. Will repeat the “rules” (which are "take your child out of the room if they get distracting and return when you are ready." & PARTICIPATE!) again next week AFTER the Hello Song and see if that helps.

toddler time: open your heart!

I am so bummed about the snowy week we had right before Valentine’s Day; the bad weather completely ruined most of my program plans!

I had an adorable assortment of valentine themed crafts for Wednesday and my pre-reg was completely full. But only half the sign ups showed up because the storm was on the way. Boo!

My Valentine-themed Baby Lapsit: cancelled for a snow day.

I planned two super cute crafts for my toddlers today but I had a feeling that attendance would be sparse with the frigid temps and 6 inches of snow. I just hate scrambling around at the last minute with nothing set up. So stressful!

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found two LOVE birds!

Puppet Song:
2 little love birds sitting on a hill
One named Jack, the other named Jill
Fly away Jack, Fly away Jill
Come back Jack, come back Jill

Books We Read:
We Love Each Other- Yonezu
Love from the Very Hungry Caterpillar- Carle (small in size but I made it very interactive so it worked fine for our small groups today)
Animal Kisses- Saltzberg

Flannel Board:  Red Heart, Red Heart, What Do You See?

...I see a pink heart looking at me, etc.

Prop Song: Laurie Berkner’s "There’s a Little Wheel Turning in My Heart"

After the VHC book, I had my Caterpillar puppet pass out hearts to all the kids.

We did:
Hold your heart up high
Hold your heart down low
Hold your heart & turn around
Hold your heart up high
Hold your heart down low
Put your heart on the ground

Then, we did the Berkner song with motions and puppets!

Craft: Heart puppet

I printed smiling hearts on cardstock and pre-cut them so kids could color and decorate with colorful pipe cleaner arms and legs. This craft was just ok, I wish I had time to prepare something more interesting.

Two small groups today: 7 in the early program, 6 in the second session. My favorite parts were the VHC book and puppet part.

toddler time: got robots?

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found two ROBOTS!

A blue one and a pink/purple one!

I found this cute couple on Etsy! It is a printable pattern that I laminated and assembled. (I wanted to purchase a toy robot but it was difficult to find anything inexpensive that was large enough for the kids to see from the back of the room so I went with this and it did the job!)

Prop Song:
I’m a little robot smart and strong
Here are my buttons, just turn me on
Press the red button and I will say
Hello to all my friends today

Can you say hi to the robots?

Robot Song:
The arms on the robot go up and down, up and down, up and down
The arms on the robot go up and down
All day long

Other verses:
Feet/clickety clack clack
Lights/ on and off (with a flashlight!!)

Books We Read:
I Love My Robot- Church (great intro to robots for this age group)
Big Bot, Small Bot: A Book of Robot Opposites- Rosenthal (fun!)
If You’re a Robot & You Know It- Carter (MAGICAL!! everyone LOVED it so much!!)

Flannel Board:  Hide and Seek Robot Game (so cute from from Read, Rhyme and Sing)

First we counted the colorful dots on the felt board. Then I told everyone that my friend Robot was hiding under one of the dots and we needed to find him. We said: Robot, Robot! are you under the COLOR dot?

This really held their attention!

Craft: Stand Up Robots

I found these cute color and fold robots here. I just printed on white cardstock and pre-cut them (with a little extra space at the bottom to make it easier to fold and tape but they stood up ok on their own as well.) I gave every child a sparkly star sticker to put on their robot. Very fun!

Lots of compliments today!! Two large groups for both sessions. I am always nervous that kids won't like this theme but the Carter book was like storytime magic! I just love when the parents laugh at one of my books. this felt board was much better than the 4 Little Robots one that I used a couple of years ago. I wanted to do the Lots of Dots book because it went great with my flannel board but there was just no time! GREAT day!

baby & me: kisses and hugs

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a teddy bear...No, there are two bears and they are HUGGING!!

Prop Song: The Hug Song
(Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb)

It’s nice to get a hug from you
Hug from you, hug from you
It’s nice to get a hug from you
Let’s give a hug right now!

It’s nice to get a kiss from you
Kiss from you, kiss from you
It's nice to get a kiss from you
Let’s blow a kiss right now!

Books We Read:
Hugs for You- Hannigan
Hugs and Kisses- Intrater

Flannel Story: You Be the Ice Cream

Inspired by last week's Flannel Friday post from Felt-tastic Flannelboard Funtime. I love their beautiful felt pieces but to save time, I just used clipart images.

You be the ice cream and I’ll be the freezer.
(Give baby a shivery hug)

You be the lemon and I’ll be the squeezer.

(Give baby a squeezy hug)

You be the hot dog and I’ll be the bun.

(Hug baby lengthwise with arms like hot dog buns)

You be the baby and we’ll have some fun!
(Finish with a hug and a kiss on baby's head)

Nice group of about 18 babies today. A couple of my moms have gone back to work or moved away this month, so not a huge group. a cute theme for the week before Valentine's Day.
