my new favorite song for baby & me

I first learned my favorite new lapsit song from this post on Storytime Ukelele:

Little bird, little bird, fly through my window
Little bird, little bird, fly through my window
Little bird, little bird, fly through my window
Sing your song this morning

Then, The Wielded Pen - Children's Corner posted about a beautiful Butterfly version that I used last spring:

Butterfly, butterfly passing me by
Butterfly, butterfly passing me by
Butterfly, butterfly passing me by
Oh, what color are you?
(name the color)

In early June, I did a baby and me class about ducks and used the song again with my flannel board:

Duckling, duckling, passing me by
Duckling, duckling, passing me by
Duckling, duckling, passing me by
Oh, what color are you?
(We named the color as I placed it on my felt board.)

And this week, I adapted the song for my patriotic red, white and blue-themed lapsit program using fish props!

Little fish, little fish, passing me by
Little fish, little fish, passing me by
Little fish, little fish, passing me by
Oh, what color are you?
(We will name the color as I hold up the Red fish, then repeat it with white and blue fishes.)

The fish are from an awesome Fish Bowl toy from Lakeshore Learning.

I just love it when I find a nice, catchy song that I can use all sorts of ways. This one is definitely a keeper!

toddler time: shop til you drop

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found a cute little purple SHOPPING bag!

Prop Song: We Went Shopping

We went shopping, we went shopping!
Now we’re back! Now we’re back!
We’ve got lots of goodies, we’ve got lots of goodies
In our sack, in our sack!
(tune: Frere Jacques)

What is in our shopping bag? Pizza!! Who likes pizza? Cookies! Yum! Anyone like waffles? How about a banana (not pictured)? Wow, we bought some good things today!

Books We Read:

Flannel Board:  Five Big Ice Creams

5 big ice creams down at the shop
Cold and sweet with sprinkles on the top
Lion comes along with a penny to pay
He buys an ice cream and eats it right away!

Giraffe, Elephant, Monkey and Zebra also purchased ice cream cones today!

Craft: Shopping Maisy

I printed coloring pics of Maisy with a shopping cart onto card stock. I cut, folded and taped them to create a little pouch in the back. Kids colored objects from a Lucy Cousins coloring sheet, then adults cut them into squares and we put them in the "cart".

Two decent sized groups today and I loved this theme, especially the song for the mystery box prop song! My boss jokingly suggested putting a credit card in the mystery box for today's theme! My husband also suggested some cute alternate lyrics for the song as well, like "We went shopping, we went shopping! Now we're broke! Now we're broke!" LOLOL!

Kids seemed to LOVE the ice cream flannel board. I made little munching noises after each animal chose an ice cream. The food props are from some Lakeshore Learning Color and Shape Boxes we bought a while back -- so cute! Great day!

toddler time: hooray for hens!

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found a chicken. What does a chicken say?

Nesting Chickens (borrowed from So Tomorrow)
Chicken, Chicken
I hear a sound
Cluck!
Who is it?

ANOTHER CHICKEN!

Chicken, Chicken
I hear a sound
CHEEP CHEEP!
Who is it?

A LITTLE CHICK!

Chicky, Chicky
I hear a sound
Crack!
What is it?
An egg!

Puppet/Shaker Song: I Know a Chicken

I passed out shaky eggs and we sang along to the Laurie Berkner song on cd while I waved around my Hen puppet.

Books We Read:
Big Fat Hen- Baker
Charlie Chicken- Denchfield

Flannel Board:  Five Eggs and Five Eggs

Awesome free printable from Sunflower Storytime!

Craft: Cardstock Chickens

I cut shapes for the chicken's body, feet, & beak. Kids colored, attached wiggly eyes & red feathers and glued everything together. They came out super cute!

Both groups went well! Everyone missed me because I was off last week. A fun theme!

I also tried out my new Song Cube today for the very first time. We usually end with If You're Happy & You Know It so I thought this might mix things up a little. I explained that we will roll the cube and sing the song that goes with the picture that ends up at the top. Of course, it has to land on the smiley face for what else? If You're Happy and You Know It ....AGAIN! The second session got to do 2 Little Bluebirds. The other songs on the cube are: The Itsy Bitsy Spider, The Mouse Ran Up the Clock, Zoom Zoom Zoom.

baby & me: fathers (and frogs!)

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a frog!
What does a frog say? RIBBIT! RIBBIT!
What does a frog do? He HOPS!

Puppet Song: One Little Frog

One little frog went hop hop hop
Hop hop hop
Hop hop hop
One little frog went hop hop hop
Hopping on a lily pad!

Books We Read:
My Dad Loves Me- Richmond (great!)
Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada- Fallon (my second time trying this one; still not crazy about it and I think its the ending??? Everyone joins in with the animal sounds which I appreciate)

Flannel Story: Where Is Little Frog?

Inspired by this post by Mel's Desk

Daddy Frog (or Big Frog) is searching the garden for Baby Frog.
Is Baby Frog hiding behind the fence? NO!
Is he behind the flower pot?...
Luckily, Baby Frog was finally located under the big gray rock.

Another medium sized group of about 15 babies which is a good number for the room but less than we usually have. Lots of stuff going on this time of year with school ending and summer vacation fast approaching. Great participation and a couple of dads attending so a nice morning.

toddler time: taking flight

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found an AIRPLANE! Does an airplane do? It flies through the air!

Puppet Song: I'm A Little Airplane

(tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I’m a little airplane in the sky
I start out low then I fly up high.
When it’s time to land, my wheels come down.
And then I gently touch the ground.

Books We Read:
Maisy’s Plane- Cousins
Hello Airplane- Cotter

Flannel Board:  Five Little Airplanes

First, I put numbers 1-5 on the board and we said their names out loud. Then, we counted our fingers on one hand together and waved them around in the air like planes.

5 little airplanes flying in the sky
Come in for a landing from way up high.

The first little airplane shining in the sun
Is the first to land on runway number ONE.

The second little airplane is carrying its crew
Is the next to land on runway number TWO.

The third little airplane is such a sight to see.
It lands quietly on runway number THREE.

The fourth little airplane can’t wait anymore.
It quickly lands on runway number FOUR.

The fifth little airplane is the last one to arrive.
And finally lands on runway number FIVE.

Let’s count up all our airplanes – 1 2 3 4 5!

Craft: Airplane Puppets.

I printed these on white cardstock and pre-cut them. The kids decorated with crayons and stickers, and taped them to a jumbo popsicle stick. I mentioned to everyone that although these toddlers aren't reading yet, it was still great to fill in their names where it said “Thanks for flying with…” because it is never too early for little ones to start seeing their names in print.

I was feeling kind of blah about today’s theme but everyone loved it! The craft and the flannel story were my favorite parts. Two decent sized groups today of about 16-18 kids per session.

baby & me: sealed with a kiss

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found a little monkey and a BIG MONKEY!

Puppet Song: The Itsy Bitsy Monkey

The itsy bitsy monkey climbed up the coconut tree
Down came a coconut and hit him on the knee
OUCH!
Out came Mama Monkey to kiss away the pain.
OOOO-mah! (kiss sound)
And the itsy bitsy monkey climbed up the tree again!

if you don't have monkey puppets, try to substitute another animal, like hedgehogs!!

The itsy bitsy hedgehog went up the big old tree
Down came an acorn and hit him on the knee
OUCH!
Out came Mama Hedgehog to kiss away the pain.
OOOO-mah! (kiss sound)

And the itsy bitsy hedgehog went up the tree again!

Flannel Story: Five Little Kisses to Give Away

I found this idea here at Sunflower Storytime

I have some kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful day?

Idea #1 Use this Lakeshore Learning Peekaboo Board to reveal family members to kiss.

I'll kiss Mommy!
Let’s blow ___ a kiss! Ooom-ma!

I have more kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful day?
I'll kiss Daddy!

I have more kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful Day?
I'll kiss my brother!

I have more kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful Day?
I'll kiss my sister!

I have two more kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful Day?
I'll kiss my pets!

I have one kiss that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful day?
I'll kiss the baby!

OR Idea #2 Kiss the Animals from my Brown Bear, Brown Bear felt set.

I put 4 felt animals face down on my flannel board.

I have 5 kisses that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful day?

I'll kiss Doggie! What does a dog say?
Let’s blow him a kiss in 3,2,1…ooo-mah!

We blew kisses to purple cat, green frog and yellow duck.

Then...

I have one kiss that I want to give away.
Who should I kiss this wonderful day?
I'll blow you all a kiss, ready?

I would have loved to use my peekaboo board today but worry about the unconventional families and non-white families being unrepresented. So I opted for the animal version. It was super fun!

We had a slightly smaller group today with about 17 babies. It really was a beautiful day out and a fun program too.
