toddler time: elephant parade

Mystery Box: Inside our polka dotted box, we found an ELEPHANT! What does an elephant have? A big long nose called a trunk!

Excellent Elephant Songs:

An elephant goes like this and that (walk feet in front of you)
He's terribly wide (Use arms out at side)
And terribly fat (same)
He has two fingers (wiggle indexes)
He had two toes (wiggle feet)
BUT, goodness gracious
WHAT A NOSE!!!! (pull on pretend trunk in front of nose)

The Elephants Are Here! (tune: “The Farmer in the Dell)
The elephants are here!
The elephants are here!
Look at all the elephants!
The elephants are here!

They’re exercising now. (March in place)
They’re exercising now.
Look at all the elephants!
They’re exercising now.

They’re jumping up and down!
They’re jumping up and down!
Look at all the elephants!
They’re jumping up and down!

They’re reaching to the sky...
They’re waving to their friends...
They’re very sleepy now…ZZZZZZZ (snoring)

Books We Read:
Hide and Seek Elmer- McKee (we made animal noises etc for this one)
I Dream of an Elephant- Rubinger (great for colors)

Flannel Board: Elephant Parade Matching Game

How many elephants are marching in our parade today?
1 2 3 4 5!

Did you ever see an elephant, an elephant, an elephant
Did you ever see an elephant carrying balloons?

Is this one carrying balloons? Is this one?

Did you ever see an elephant, an elephant, an elephant
Did you ever see an elephant with a peanut in his trunk?

Hmm, is this one carrying a peanut? Is this one?

Did you ever see an elephant, an elephant, an elephant
Did you ever see an elephant with a polkadot umbrella?

Did you ever see an elephant, an elephant, an elephant
Did you ever see an elephant play catch with a ball?

Did you ever see an elephant, an elephant, an elephant
Did you ever see an elephant bringing flowers to a friend?

Craft: Elephant puppets

I cut construction paper elephants for the kids to color. I passed out sticky wiggly eyes and patterned paper elephant ears to glue on. We taped on popsicle sticks to make very colorful puppets!

Both sessions mobbed today, really difficult at times to get parents to quiet down. I liked my flannel board matching game and the craft a lot. The books were great choices also, so a very good day!
