flannel friday: Five Rubber Ducks

Bath Time was our Toddler theme for today!

Five Rubber Ducks
5 rubber ducks came out to play
(show 5 fingers)
Battling the waves in the tub today
(make wave motion with your hand)
Along came a SPLASH that sent one to shore
(replace duck with felt splash)
And then he/she couldn’t play anymore.

No, that's not an unfortunate looking blue flower -- it's a splash!

Repeat until all the ducks have left the bathtub.

I saw this rhyme on Etsy and it was tons of fun!

We counted our ducks and also said the color. Then, we waved goodbye to each one as I removed it from the felt board. "Bye purple duckie!" -- they really loved that part.

For our craft, we made Bath Buddies, printed from www.freekidscrafts.com. For more info & a link, check out my post HERE

Thanks for reading!

toddler time: fun in the tub (bathtime)

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found a rubber duckie and a washcloth – when do you need these? At BATHTIME!

What does a duck say? What color is our washcloth?

Bath Song: All Thru My Bath Time from So Tomorrow
Tune: Wheels on the Bus

The bubbles in the tub go, (blow bubbles for this verse)
Pop, pop, pop! Pop, pop, pop!
Pop, pop, pop!
The bubbles in the tub go pop, pop, pop!
All through my bath time!

The washcloth in the tub goes scrub, scrub, scrub...
The ducky in the tub goes quack, quack, quack...

We handed out little yellow ducks (from OTC) to all the kids. These were kind of a mixed success, cute but noisy if they banged them around or dropped them on the tile floor. Maybe use paper ducks next time! We said our usual rhyme:

Put your duck UP, put your duck DOWN
Hold your duck and turn around!
Put your duck UP, put your duck DOWN
Put your duck down on the ground.

Books We Read:
Get Out of My Bath- Teckentrup (LOVE it! had to shorten the text a little but so cute)
Maisy’s Bath- Cousins (really held their attention!)

Flannel Board: Five Rubber Duckies

5 rubber ducks came out to play
Battling the waves in the tub today
Along came a SPLASH that sent one to shore
And then he/she couldn’t play anymore.

No, that's not an unfortunate looking blue flower -- it's a splash!

No ducks, just 5 water splashes at the end.

I found this rhyme on Etsy. (Sometimes, I look at the flannels for sale to find ideas to "borrow". Occasionally,  I actually buy things too – so much great stuff on that site.)

We had fun with this rhyme, counting ducks, replacing each one with a splash of blue water, discussing the color of the duck and waving goodbye to each one when I removed it from the board. Bye purple duckie!

Craft: Bath Buddies

I love the printable animals on this website. I shrunk everything slightly, printed the bathtubs on paper and the animals on cardstock.

I trimmed the bathtubs and taped them in advance to make a little pocket for the animal so it looks like it’s in the tub. Kids just colored and grownups cut. JUST SOOOO CUTE!! Might be great with printable envelopes if you wanted to skip the taping part.

This theme was so fun!!I loved my flannel song and the bath buddies craft. Also, the song with the bubbles and the duck were great. They were not expecting me to blow bubbles then so it was a cute surprise. We had two nice sized groups of about 15 kids. A fun day!

Opposites- Carle (okay, nice art)
Tall and Short- Litton (loved this one!)
Horsey Up and Horsey Down- Church

Puppet Rhyme #2: Roley Poley with my Hedgehog puppet

First, we hide the hedgehog in a scarf.
Where is hedgehog? PEEKABOO!
Where is hedgehog? PEEKABOO!
Where is hedgehog? PEEKABOO!
PEEKABOO to Hedgehog!

Roley Poley, Roley, Poley
Up Up Up, Up Up Up!
Roley Roley Poley
Roley Roley Poley
Down Down Down! Down Down Down!
(tune: Frere Jacques)
(repeat with In & Out AND Fast & Slow!)
I learned this one on Jbrary!

Flannel Story: 1 2 3 Bears

A little bear, a bigger bear, a great big bear I see.
Shall we count them? Are you ready?
1 2 3!

School is out here this week so we had lots of siblings and families that we don't see all the time. TONS of people! This was a good theme though and everything was under control, so a good day!

toddler time: owls in love

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found a mailbox! What color is it? Should we see what’s in the mailbox? Valentines!!!

The mailbox was a Target dollar bin purchase!

We handed out little pink valentines to all the kids and sang this song:

HEARTS ON THE MOVE
(found HERE)
(tune: "He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands")
Wave your valentine In the air.
Wave your valentine In the air.
Wave your valentine In the air.
Wave your valentine in the air.

Put your valentine On your nose.
Put your valentine On your nose.
Put your valentine On your nose.
Put your valentine on your nose.

Repeat the last verse with other body parts; we did knee and head.
Then, I told the kids to give their valentine to someone special, maybe to their "grown up" or to a friend.

Give a valentine to a friend.
Give a valentine to a friend.
Give a valentine to a friend.
Give a valentine to a friend…

Craft: Valentine Owl Decorations

I used copy & paste to make these cute little owl circles for the kids to color. We decorated the front and the back with hearts, owls and doilies from Michael’s. Then we taped on a red ribbon for hanging.

A fun day! Valentine's has always been one of my favorite holidays. We had two groups of about 12-14 kids on another bitterly cold morning, so not too crowded. I loved today's songs and craft as well as my flannel board. The books worked well, too.

Cute story: one of the mom's that i've known for a looonngg time told me that on the way to the library her son told her that he likes Ms. Amy. "She is cute," he said!!! LOLOL!

flannel friday: valentine owls

sorry, this Valentine themed post is a little bit late!

I am so totally jealous of everyone who plans this stuff in advance; I am always throwing things together at the last minute these days. I do have some extra job duties right now since my boss is out on maternity leave, so that is my excuse!

anyway, I found some very cute red & pink owl stickers at Michael's last month & thought they'd be adorable for my valentine craft.

The cute valentine owls pictured below are purchased from Etsy. I tweaked a popular owl fingerplay by changing just one or two words to make it more "holiday friendly". "Moonlit" night became "valentine" night; we have halloween night so I figured why not????

I found the original rhyme on PerpetualPreschool.com

baby & me: love, love, love!

Mystery Box: Inside our mystery box, we found 2 birds!  What color are they? RED! They are LOVE birds!!!

I use these guys every year for Valentine’s Day. Love them!

Puppet Rhyme:

2 little love birds sitting in a tree
1 named Doug, one named Dee
Fly away Doug, Fly away Dee!
Come Back Doug, Come back Dee!

The babies were fascinated!!

Books We Read:
Hugs and Kisses- Intrater (short & sweet!!!)
Where is Baby’s Valentine?- Katz (great)

Flannel Story: I’m a Little Love Bug

I was TOTALLY inspired by a recent Flannel Friday post found on Read, Rhyme and Sing. All of my moms loved this guy, too!!

(One change: I traded in the hair for hands!)

Sweet Song for Valentine’s Day:

This was a last minute addition to my program and I just LOVE it! From Jbrary of course! They always come through for me. Here is the youtube link.

Love Somebody Yes I Do
Love somebody yes I do,
Love somebody yes I do,
Love somebody yes I do
but I won't tell who.

Jiggle like jelly yes I will,
jiggle like jelly yes I will,
Jiggle like jelly yes I will,
Jiggle like jelly
'cause I can't sit still.

Climb a ladder, oh so high,
climb a ladder oh so high
Climb a ladder oh so high
till I touch the sky.

This is a keeper I will do every week!! At least for a while! Sooo cute.

A bitter cold day in the Northeast today so we had a smaller group of about 11 babies, which was fine with me! A LOVE-ly morning!! One super-nice mother told me that her son has been singing many of our songs at home which makes me sooooo happy.

toddler time: hooray for hugs & kisses!

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found Duck and Goose! What color is Duck? What color is his friend Goose?  What does a duck say?

Books We Read:
Duck and Goose: Goose Needs a Hug-  Hill (Perfect for this age group!!)
Big Hugs, Little Hugs- Numeroff (Love it!)
Daddy Hugs- Tafuri
Daddy Hugs- Warnes

Flannel Board/Puppet Story: Chester the Raccoon & the Kissing Hand

I borrowed this idea from the AWESOME blog Sunflower Storytime. I used my raccoon puppet. I velcroed a felt heart on his paw and we matched it to one on the board. We also counted the hearts and named the colors. See the post HERE for the sweet rhyme.

Craft: Love Bugs

I printed these adorable bugs on cardstock. They colored them and cut them out. We taped sparkly antennas on them too. Don't forget to fold the arms so he looks like he's really hugging! Perfect craft for today’s theme came from this blog. You can also print baby bugs for the big bug to hold but that seemed like too much work for toddlers. Would use another time for older kids though!

Very small turnout today due to snow. Was planning to do penguins today but switched at the last minute. This was a great theme and I will re-use these ideas for sure. My favorite moment of the day was after I read the Duck & Goose book, all the little girls spontaneously started hugging each other -- so cute!!!

baby & me: building with blocks

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found blocks!  What color are they? Let’s count them together.

Books We Read:
Moving Blocks- Yonezu (fun!)
Playing- Slegers

Flannel Story: 5 Building Blocks

I know I got this rhyme from somewhere but I’m not sure where.

I put the blocks on one at a time as I said the rhyme. These blocks were just printed from clipart and laminated.

1 lonely building block feeling so blue
I’ll stack another one
Now there are 2!

2 building blocks as tall as a tree
I’ll stack another one
Now there are 3

3 building blocks, look! I found one more.
I’ll stack it here and
 now there are 4

4 building blocks, my tower is so high.
I’ll stack one more
Now there are 5

5 building blocks, I can’t fit anymore.
Let’s have some fun and
Knock them to the floor!!!

Ready? 1-2-3!

We played with the parachute today so I skipped a puppet rhyme. Nice to try something different.

Great turn out today, 17 babies attended. This was a fun theme and everyone loved the parachute. After class, one new mom told me that she was "shocked" by how good today's program was. A nice compliment!
