toddler time: hat party!

Our theme for Toddler Time today was HATS!

Mystery Box: When we opened the yellow box, we found a birthday hat.

We passed out hats to all the children and we did this rhyme:

Put your hat UP, put your hat DOWN
Hold your hat and turn around!
Put your hat UP, put your hat  DOWN
Put your hat down on the ground

and then:

Silly Hat Song (Tune: This Old Man)
On my head, I wear my hat.
It is such a silly hat
That my head will wiggle waggle to and fro
Where else can my silly hat go?
[Repeat using foot, elbow and knee.]

Books We Read:
Will You Wear a Blue Hat – Karp
Who's Under That Hat?- Weeks/Carter
Do You Have a Hat- Spinelli

Fun Hat Songs & Rhymes:

Winter Hokey Pokey
You put your scarf in, you put scarf hat out
You put your hat in, you put your hat out
You put your mittens in, you take your mittens out
You put your boots in, you take your boots out
You put your coat in, you put your coat out

Grandma’s Glasses
These are Grandma’s glasses
This is Grandma’s hat
This is the way she folds her hands
And lays them in her lap
Here are Grandpa’s glasses
And here is Grandpa’s hat
And here’s the way he folds his arms
And takes a little nap

Flannel Story #1: Hats of Every Color (although I changed the first line because I couldn't find a good yellow clipart clown hat, I want to give credit for this rhyme to Jen in the Library - thanks Jen!)

When I build things, I'm a happy fellow
My hat is the color yellow.
When I fight fires, I protect my head
My hat is the color red.

I catch robbers, here’s a clue:
My hat is the color blue.
I had rabbits in my magic hat
My hat is the color black.

I’m a chef, I cook just right
My hat is the color white.

I’m a king, my crown is old
It’s a shiny shade of gold.

Flannel Story #2: Little Cat

I added four additional hats to our flannelboard: pirate, cowboy, winter and party ones. Then we looked for the kitty hidden under one of our hats saying, "Little Cat, Little Cat, Are you hiding under THIS hat?"

Puppet Rhyme: Bunny in a Hat by Folkmanis (I love this puppet & so do the kids!)

Little rabbit in a hat sitting so still
Will he pop out?
YES HE WILL!
He hops to the left
he hops to the right
he hops all around
then he POPS out of sight!

OR

Here is a bunny
With ears so funny
And here is his magical hat
When a noise he hears
He pricks up his ears
And he jumps in his magical hat!

Craft: Winter hats using paper plates, snowflake foamies and pom poms. I borrowed this idea from Storytime Katie and it was awesome!

Awesome class today! The best part was one of the mothers told me that whenever they drive by the library, her little girl says "Miss Amy's House!" So cute!!

baby & me: All about Love

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found a heart! What color is our heart? Red!

Books We Read:
Peek a Love- Yoon (always a hit!)
Hugs and Kisses- Intrater  (love the photos and short text!)

Flannel Story: Lovebug, Lovebug

This one is similar to the Little Mouse flannel board. Hide the bug and try to find it!

Lovebug, Lovebug, oh so smart!
Are you hiding under the (COLOR) heart?

Puppet: Two Little Lovebirds (see first photo)

2 little lovebirds sitting on a hill
One named Jack, one named Jill
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill
Come back Jack, come back Jill!

I had planned to use this theme last week for February 13th, but then I got a bad cold AND it snowed. I think love should really be a year round theme so I decided to use it this week. We had a nice group, a little small with most of the schools on break and many families away.

preschool fun: polar bear time

Today, our theme was BEARS, especially polar bears!

Books We Read:
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear- Carle (a classic!)
Hush Little Polar Bear- Mack (sang this to the tune Hush Little Baby and everyone paid attention despite the lengthy text)
If You Were a Panda Bear- Minor (probably my favorite for today's theme)
Forever- Dodd (LOVE the illustrations)

Flannel Story: All Kinds of Bears

I found the CUTEST bear flannel board in the world on Mel’s Desk and she even posted her pattern, so of course I had to make a set of my own.

All Kinds of Bears (found here )
(Sue Eilers & Mary Marshall)
Tune: "Mary Had A Little Lamb"

Grizzly bears are big and brown,
Big and brown, big and brown.
Grizzly bears are big and brown.
They live in the woods.

Polar bears are soft and white,
Soft and white, soft and white.
Polar bears are soft and white.
They live where it's cold.

Panda bears are black and white
Black and white, black and white.
Panda bears are black and white.
They eat bamboo in China.

Black bears like blueberries,
blueberries, blueberries.
Black bears like blueberries
That they find in the woods.

Teddy bears are just my size,
Just my size, just my size.
Teddy bears are just my size,
To cuddle with at night.

For my final verse, I used "Koala bears are very soft…to cuddle with at night."

Flannel Board #2: Marco the Polar Bear

I made my Marco a couple of years ago after I found the idea here

Marco the Polar Bear
As white as the snow
Sat on the ice, near the cold waters flow
Lunch! I need lunch he said
I'll make a wish.
He stuck in his paw and came up with a fish!

What color was it?

I let the kids come up and pick a fish from a special container and place it on the flannel board. It was great having the participation element to the story!

Craft: Polar Bear Puppet Cup

Since I had a bunch of polar bear templates and supplies left over from our winter party craft last month AND they came out sooo cute, I decided to do this craft again. I had a back up bear craft just in case but I didn’t need it. Everyone loved this craft and its so easy!

toddler time: valentine fun

Our theme for Toddler Time today was KISSES & LOVE, in honor of one of my most favorite holidays: Valentine’s Day.

Mystery Box: When we opened the yellow box, we found a mailbox!

Inside the mailbox was a valentine for me from Froggie! Thanks Froggie!

But wait, there are a whole bunch of valentines in here for YOU! (I bought the cutest Elmo valentines and wrote one out so each child could have one.)

All the children came up to pick a valentine and we did this rhyme:
Put your valentine UP, put your valentine DOWN
Hold your valentine and turn around!
Put your valentine UP, put your valentine  DOWN
Put your valentine down on the ground

Books We Read:
Where’s Nicky's Valentine? – Ziefert
Be Mine, Be Mine, Sweet Valentine- Weeks
A Kiss Like This- Murphy

LOVE-ly Valentine Rhymes:

Two Little Love Birds
2 little love birds sitting on a hill
One named James, One named Jill
Fly away James, Fly away Jill
Come back James, Come back Jill

Making a Heart
I put my hands together
This is how I start
I curve my fingers right around
And I can make a heart!

Flannel Story: Four Little Valentines (another wonderful idea from Sunflower Storytime!)

4 little valentines were sent to my house
The 1st one said “be mine, from Mouse.”

3 little valentines full of love
The 2nd one said “you’re sweet, from Dove”

2 little valentines just for me
The 3rd one said “be my honey from Bee”

1 little valentine mailed with care
The last one said “here’s a hug, from Bear”

Puppet Rhyme: Five Kisses (from Flannel Friday of course! Check out The Storytime Lady and Storytime Secrets)

First I put five laminated clipart lips on the flannel board & we counted them together.

I have 5 kisses that I want to give away
Who should I kiss this Valentine's Day?
(pull out mouse puppet) Should I kiss a Mouse?
(remove 1 pair of lips after each verse))

I have 4 kisses that I want to give away
Who should I kiss this Valentine's Day?
(pull out puppet) Should I kiss a Ladybug?

I have 3 kisses that I want to give away
Who should I kiss this Valentine's Day?
(pull out puppet) Should I kiss a Bumblebee?

I have 2 kisses that I want to give away
Who should I kiss this Valentine's Day?
(pull out puppet) Should I kiss a Spider?

I have 1 kiss that I want to give away
Who should I kiss this Valentine's Day?
Can I blow you all a kiss?

Craft : Valentine hearts with stickers AND heart finger puppets printed from Lakeshore Learning.

Despite yet ANOTHER winter storm yesterday, we had a great group today and everyone loved the program, especially the crafts.

toddler time: fire trucks

Our theme for Toddler Time today was FIRE TRUCKS! And firemen! And fire dogs too!

Mystery Box: We found a picture of a fire truck in our yellow box today. What color is a fire truck?  Red!

We passed out paper fire engine puppets to each child for our next rhyme:
Put your fire truck UP, put your fire truck DOWN
Hold your fire truck and turn around!
Put your fire truck UP, put your fire truck  DOWN
Put your fire truck down on the ground

Books We Read:
Fire Truck- Sis (perfect for this age group!)
Meeow and the Big Box- Braun (great choice also!)
Fire Fighter Piggy Wiggy- Fox

We also sang Ivan Ulz's Fire Truck. Mr Ulz used to perform at local libraries here a while back and was kind enough to give me a copy of this book. It has a cd but I decided to sing it myself (although he sings it MUCH better than me!)

Fabulous Fire Truck Rhymes:

The Wheels on the Firetruck (Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)
The wheels on the firetruck go round & round.
Round & round, round & round.
The wheels on the firetruck go round & round.
All thru the town.

The siren on the firetruck goes woo, woo, woo.
The hose on the firetruck goes squirt, squirt, squirt.
The ladder on the firetruck goes up and down.
The dog on the firetruck goes woof woof woof! (I held up the dog in the picture below for this last verse)

Our fire truck stick puppet, Freddy the Fireman, and our cute Fire Dog.

Puppet Rhyme: I held up Freddy the Fireman for this rhyme. He is pretty big and I used two 8 1/2 X 11 pieces of card stock when I made him. He is attached at the waist with velcro for easier storage. I found the template on Making Learning Fun.

Fireman Fireman, turn around
Fireman, fireman, touch the ground
Fireman, fireman, drive the truck
Fireman, fireman, don’t get stuck!
Fireman, fireman, hurry to the fire
Fireman, fireman, spray the water higher.
Fireman, fireman, give a shout,
Fireman, fireman, you put the fire out! Hooray!

Flannel Story: I found this cute clipart at Sunflower Storytime. We didn't have time for the flannel board this time, but this was the rhyme I was planning to use. It originally had five fire trucks instead of three, but I shortened it for my toddler group.

3 little fire trucks waiting at the hall
One goes out to answer a call
With siren sounds and lights on bright
Off he goes, there’s a fire to fight!

(Countdown to …)
NO little fire trucks waiting at the hall
But there they all come back to their stalls
With sirens quiet and all made right
3 little fire trucks say good night.

Craft: Fire Dog paper bag puppets

I found some cute fire dog patterns here. We colored our fire dogs, then cut them out and glued them to paper bags for an easy craft.

We had a huge group today and everyone loved the fire truck theme. I felt like the books and rhymes that I chose for this topic were strong, but I wasn’t as crazy about my flannel board rhyme. All in all, a fun theme!

baby & me: Peekaboo Mouse!

Mystery Box: Inside our yellow box, we found a little white mouse (puppet)!

Books We Read:
Peekaboo- Gomi (Each double page spread of this book features a creature and some simple text. There are holes where the creature’s eyes should be & you hold it up to your face. I figured this would be one of those things that turned out either totally amazing or extremely horrible, but I’m happy to report that everyone loved it!)
Baby Cakes- Wilson

Flannel Story:
Little Mouse, Little Mouse (see this post)

Puppet:
Peekaboo with Mousie (see the above link as well!)

I was afraid no one would show up today after a nasty day of snow & rain on Wednesday but we had a lovely group of about 10 kids. They were all around the same age and everyone was interested in the books and puppets. The Peekaboo book, Mouse flannel board and Mousie puppet were today’s highlights but I enjoyed the interactivity of Baby Cakes. Great day!

Here is a mitten,                    (hold up one hand)
A snug, fuzzy one-                 (rub palms together)
With a place for my fingers     (wiggle 4 fingers)
And a place for my thumb        (wiggle thumb)

One for the right.                     (hold up right hand)
Here are OUR mittens,              (hold up two hands)
As soft as can be                      (stroke the back of one hand)
A warm pair for you                   (point to the neighbor)
And a warm pair for me             (point to yourself)

Putting On Mittens
(Tune: The Farmer In the Dell)
The thumb in the thumb place,
Fingers all together!
This is the song we sing
When it is mitten weather

Flannel Story: Colorful Mittens

This set was purchased on ebay a few years back.

My poor little kitten lost her mitten
And started to cry boo hoo
So I helped my kitten to look for her mitten
Her beautiful mitten of BLUE!

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my mothers bed
But that little mitten was not the right mitten
For it was the color RED

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my father’s pillow
But that little mitten was not the right mitten
For it was the color YELLOW

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
On the hand of my brother’s toy clown
But that little mitten was not the right mitten
For it was the color BROWN

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the laundry so clean
But that little mitten was not the right mitten
For it was the color GREEN

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the kitchen sink
But that little mitten was not the right mitten
For it was the color PINK

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Inside my favorite shoe
But that little mitten was just the right mitten
For it was the color BLUE!

Puppet Rhyme #1: The Mitten in the Snow

I purchased these adorable finger puppets on Etsy. Then I made a big felt mitten to hold them. This was a little long for my toddlers today. Next time,  maybe leave out a couple of animals.

(tune: Farmer in the Dell)
The mitten on the ground.
The mitten on the ground.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The mitten on the ground.

The (mole) snuggles in.
The (mole) snuggles in.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The (mole) snuggles in.

Repeat with rabbit, fox, owl, badger, hedgehog, mouse and bear.
After the last animal, pretend to sneeze and make all animals fall out of the mitten.

Puppet Rhyme #2: Hedgehog

I brought out Mr Hedgehog for some Peekaboo and my favorite new rhyme, Roly Poly (see this post).

Mr Hedgehog is feeling shy today! He’s all covered up in his green blanket. Let’s see if we can get him to come out.

(tune for both songs is Are You Sleeping?)
Where is Hedgehog? Where is Hedgehog?
Here I am, here I am.
How are you today sir? Very well I thank you.
Come and play!

Then we do this rhyme with Mr Hedgehog:
Roly poly, roly poly
Up up up! Up up up!
Roly roly poly! Roly roly poly!
Down down down! Down down down!

Repeat with Out & In and Fast & Slow.

Craft: Kittens with Mittens

I found this cute craft on an awesome blog called Jen in the Library.

I printed the kitty head on orange card stock. I cut the body & the mittens from construction paper before the program and hole punched everything to make things a little easier. Everyone loved their kitties!

We had a wonderful group today! Mr Hedgehog & the craft were today's highlights.
