toddler time: Pirates!

Our theme for Toddler Time today was PIRATES!

Mystery Box: We traded in our yellow box today for a cool treasure chest! What was in our treasure chest? Gold coins, of course!

We passed out pirate ship puppets to each child for our next rhyme:

Put your ship UP, put your ship DOWN
Hold your ship and turn around!
Put your ship UP, put your ship DOWN
Put your ship down on the ground

We also did this cute rhyme (tune: Row Row Row Your Boat):

Sail sail sail your ship
Gently over the sea
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
A pirate’s life for me!

Books We Read:
Bizzy Bear Pirate Adventure- Davies
Pirate Nap-Smith
I Love My Pirate Papa- Leuck

Today's stories & our treasure chest!

Fun Pirate Rhymes:

Ten Little Pirates
Ten little pirates stood in a row, (Hold up 10 fingers.)
They bowed to their heads to the captain so! (Lower and raise fingers.)
They marched to the left; (March hands to left.)
They marched to the right. (March hands to right.)
They shouted yo ho! (Cup hand by mouth.)
And gave their captain a fright. (Hands over heart.)
(ALL rhymes borrowed from Sunflower Storytime

Flannel Story:

Pirate's Patch (tune: Mary Wore a Red Dress)
Pirate wore a RED patch, RED patch, RED patch
Pirate wore a RED patch all day long

(repeat with other colors until final verse:)

Pirate wore a BLACK patch, BLACK patch, BLACK patch
Pirate wore a BLACK patch all night long!

I found this great idea on Storytime Katie’s blog.

Puppet Rhyme:

The One-Eyed Pirate
The one-eyed pirate (cover one eye)
He’s fierce, and he’s tough (clench fists & scowl)
He digs for buried treasure (digging motion)
But it’s never enough. (shake head)
He lives on a ship (hold up flat hand, thumb out)
Way out on the sea. (rock hand in curvy motion, other hand under it)
His parrot is his only friend, perch hand on shoulder)
Except for me. (point to self)

I used clip art puppets for this rhyme.
