toddler time: dinosaur day

Our theme for today's Toddler Time was DINOSAURS!

Mystery Box: When we opened the yellow box, we found a cute little dinosaur that likes to give kisses with his long red tongue. What color is our dinosaur? Green!

We handed out dinosaur stick puppets & did our first rhyme:

Dinosaurs Up!
Dinosaurs Down!
Hold your dinosaur & turn around.

Dinosaurs Up!
Dinosaurs down!
Put your dinosaur on the ground.

Also Dinosaur Dinosaur, Where Can You Be?

(hide 2 dinosaur puppets or props behind your back)
Dinosaur, dinosaur, where can you be?
Hiding behind me, where no one can see.(hands, with props, are hiding behind your back)
Now you see one, she's looking at you.(bring one hand out)
Here come the other and now there are two!(bring other hand out)

We also marched to We Are the Dinosaurs by Laurie Berkner (LOVE her!)

Books We Read:
Dinosaurs - Taback
Little Dinos Don't Bite- Michael Dahl (Everyone LOVED this one! If you haven't read it yet, Little Dino has sharp teeth & needs to learn what NOT to bite: his toys, his shoes, his mother! All the moms laughed at that page. Very cute, perfect for little readers!)
Dinosaur Galore- Stickland

Flannel Story: Five Enormous Dinosaurs

Get your dinosaurs out. Here we go!

Five enormous dinosaurs letting out a roar. ROAR!
One stomped away and then there were four.
Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, ROAR!

Four enormous dinosaurs knocking down a tree. Clunk!
One stomped away and then there were three.
Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, ROAR!

Three enormous dinosaurs eating tiger stew. Ew!
One stomped away and then there were two.
Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, ROAR!

Two enormous dinosaurs sitting in the sun.
One flapped away and then there were one.
Flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, ROAR!

One enormous dinosaurs left all alone.
He stomped away and then there were none.
Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, ROAR!

thanks to http://wiki.kcls.org for today's awesome dino rhymes!

Puppet: Dinosaur in an Egg (Folkmanis)
Inside her egg shell, white and round,
Baby dino is safe and sound.
But she wants to come out into the light ,
So she pushes and shoves with all her might.
Her shell soon cracks and creaks and pops,
One big jump and out she pops!
Adapted from a poem by Margo Miller found here

We passed around a bucket filled with plastic eggs (like the ones you buy at Easter) and each child got one. Inside was a tiny felt dinosaur! I found this amazing idea on a great blog called Falling Flannelboards.

Craft:
We made Dinosaur finger puppets! You can find them here.

We had a CRAZY but very fun program this morning with almost 25 kids. I was afraid I wouldn't have enough dinosaur eggs and puppet print outs. One parent commented that I'll need a bigger room soon! It's strange to think I used to have very small groups for Toddler Time and I wonder where all these toddlers suddenly came from?!!!!!
